WE ARE IN THE UNIVERSAL FLOW
We’ve heard it’s better if we live in the flow, as it offers a much
easier life. But a common response to that is ‘It’s too hard. I never
know if it’s my imagination. I don’t trust myself to get it right.’ And
yes, there are times we doubt our own abilities and need to build some
confidence. This can be done with a bit of practice. There are
suggestions that increase confidence in a recent article called ‘Trusting
the whisper of soul knowing.’
We are spiritual beings and that means we are inherently connected to
the energy of divine order that exists all around us. We see a world
around us that responds to natural guidance, in all the seasons, tides
and sunrises. The yearly migration of millions of birds that travel
thousands of miles across the globe, show us this. They don’t use a map
or GPS, there’s no struggle, each bird perfectly tuned into the
collective rhythm, catching the thermals and wind currents, letting
themselves be carried to their destination. A forest of trees doesn’t
compete for the sun, which would destroy them. Instead they grow into
the available light. A stream doesn’t fight the rock in its path, it
finds a path by flowing around, over, or through cracks. This is the
essence of being in the flow, to move with what is in front of us and
not fight it. I think everything responds to the big change of day and
night. Flowers close their petals, animals look for shelter, and the
temperature drops. Our bodies have this same rhythm, responding to the
fading light, they prepare to sleep.
Our current world is
built so strongly around structure. We’re so used to defining ourselves
by our story, job, possessions, experiences, how others see us, and how
much we achieve in a day or even in a life. We’re busy planning every
minute of the day, squeezing in kid’s ballet class and footy practice,
with barely a moment to consider if there was a better way that didn’t
leave us feeling stressed and tired. And when we’re stressed, we try to
force things, amd that takes us further out of the flow. We’ve had a
lifetime of taking action from direction from our emotions and mind
chatter. We’ve been taught to stay in control and that makes us worry
about letting go of that control, thinking we will mess up or look
incompetent.
Most of us have experienced at some time, a gut feeling or knowing that
we couldn't explain. It wasn’t something we read or heard, we just knew
it. That is our inner connection to our true self. These moments offer
us proof it is possible. We are often connected, but we aren’t always
listening or are too busy for it to register that it came out of nowhere
directing us to a certain action, or maybe giving us a quiet ‘no’ to an
idea we had.
We can build our trust in ourselves the flow. When you go to the shops,
instead of driving around stressed looking for a spot, just relax and
let yourself be guided to an empty space. If you’re struggling to solve
a problem at work, try stepping away from it completely. Make a cup of
tea, look out at the trees, and let your mind go quiet. Often, the
perfect answer will pop into your head as soon as you stop trying to
force it.
You may be in the flow more than you realize. Maybe you can trust it
already! Here are some examples.
You find the right thing at the right time, maybes a rare book, or tool,
or just the piece of information, exactly when you needed it. You
stumble upon a craft class and discover not only do you love it, but
you’re really good at it.
Maybe you meet the right person needed at an exact moment. A few years
ago, a friend, a skilled board rider was surfing early in the morning at
Duranbah on the Gold Coast of Australia. Board riders like to surf with
a buddy, for safety reasons, but it was very early, still dark, and
no-one was around. A freak wave threw him and the fin of his board
sliced into his kidney and into the gut. Blood everywhere, but he
managed to get to the beach and collapsed. A lady who had walked on that
beach on the same day of the week for years, had, for the very first
time, changed the day and was right at that spot when he got to the
beach. The lady was not just a nurse, she was the Head of the Emergency
department at a nearby major hospital.
Understanding immediately what was needed, she rang the ambulance, who
arrived fast. Mobile phones sure have their use. After an operation and
days in an induced coma, he recovered fully. And yes, he would have died
if that nurse had not intuitively changed her day. So may lives are
saved from people being intuitive. Someone living opposite saw the
ambulance, came over and took his board to store for him. They gave the
ambulance guys their address. My friend had driven to the beach that
morning in the dark, and hidden his car keys in the long grass, before
climbing down the hill to surf. Some mates were given the task of
searching for the keys to get his car driven back to his home. As it was
still parked in a deserted dark hill at night, he was concerned for his
car. They couldn’t find them. I went to visit him the following day
barely visible with so many tubes in the body! As I lived nearby, he
asked if I could find his keys. This was another part of the intuitive
flow. I got out of my car, walked across the long grass, stooped down
and picked them up. I took them back to him, for his friends to sort out
the car.
You may meet someone by chance who offers the insight, support, or an
opportunity you need, that maybe you weren’t even aware you needed. You
bump into an old workmate from a job you had loved years ago, and he
mentions he still works there and they’re looking for people with his
skills for a new programme. Getting lost while driving, you stumble on a
beautiful, peaceful place that inspires something in your life or brings
you much needed peace. You observe a natural sequence, like watching a
flock of parrots fly into the trees to settle for the night, or waves
intercepting or weather patterns that somehow it align with your
personal journey or feelings and provides some reassurance or guidance.
Maybe you suddenly get a solution to a problem, that comes out of
nowhere. You may meet someone by chance who offers the insight, support,
or an opportunity you need, that maybe you weren’t even aware you
needed.
We can work on building our trust. When you go to the shops, intend
there will be a car spot for you. Instead of driving around stressed
looking for a spot, let yourself be guided to an empty space. If you are
struggling to solve a problem at work, step back. Make a cup of tea,
look out the window at the trees, and let your mind go quiet. Very
often, the perfect answer will come to you as soon as you stop trying to
force it.
The flow is always there. It waits for us to be there too.
Love,
Sandy Stevenson
